The highlights of sightseeing in Eastern Hokkaido are the Shiretoko Peninsula in the north and Kushiro Wetland, Lake Akan, and Lake Mashu in the south. Kushiro Wetland is the largest wetland in Japan and has registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland for the protection of migratory birds. The type of creatures that live in the area where nature has preserved Lake Akan is famous for its marimo, which makes beautiful spheres. It has designated as a national unique natural monument. You can also tour the lake on a pleasure boat. On the other hand, Lake Mashu is a lake where nature is protected and is known to be the most transparent lake in Japan, and many tourists visit it by drive.
Between Lake Mashu and Lake Akan is Lake Kussharo, the largest caldera lake in Japan. The view of Lake Kussharo from the Bihoro Pass on the west side is magnificent and is a tourist spot.
Lake Akan has a lakeside hot spring town, and Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo have a Kawayu hot spring town, which serves as a lodging base for tourists. There is Atsanupuri near Kawayu Onsen. It is an active volcano, which means a bare mountain in the Ainu language, and you can go up close to see the crater.
